The Milwaukee Democratic Socialists of America calls on the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors to adopt a question onto the fall general election ballot that gauges voters’ support of abortion care in Milwaukee County.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has struck a critical blow to reproductive rights. In Wisconsin, the ruling triggered an 1849 state law that makes abortion a felony without exceptions for rape or incest. As a result, Planned Parenthood and other reproductive health organizations have stopped providing abortions statewide.
This is a brazen violation of basic human rights. Now is the time to act to protect the bodily autonomy of all Wisconsinites.
Milwaukee County 4th District Supervisor Ryan Clancy has proposed a resolution to add a question to this November’s general election ballot measuring public opinion regarding abortion access. This question would ask if the voter supports repealing Wisconsin’s abortion ban and restoring legal access to abortion.
“We are not debating abortion, nor is abortion on the ballot. Abortion is a basic human right, it’s health care, and it should not be up for debate,” Clancy said.
Milwaukee DSA joins Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin in calling on the board to adopt this resolution. Abortion care is fundamental and our lawmakers must take action to defend it.
“In a truly free society, everyone would have the ability to choose when or when not to reproduce,” said Milwaukee DSA Co-Chair Anna Dvorak. “Unfortunately, far-right extremists and their capitalist allies have succeeded in destroying reproductive freedom in this country. This doesn’t just impact people with uteruses—it impacts everyone. The Milwaukee DSA urges the board to adopt this question onto the ballot and do everything in their power to take further action to restore reproductive freedom in Milwaukee County.”
